Wednesday, July 21st: La Belle Epoque de Warhol

A small group of Art lovers received a private tour of 2 fantastic exhibits at the Nassau Museum of Art. The museum's Director, Prof. Charles Riley, greeting us with a top hat and a brief piano interlude before launching into a dynamic tour of the main exhibit, which brought the Belle Époque to life in painting, sculpture and textiles. Then it was on to the second floor to take in pieces by Andy Warhol on social loan to the museum.

Friday, July 23rd: The Knights perform in Bryant Park

We celebrated fine music and sophisticated "dining" at Bryant Park. The Knights played at Bryant Park as part of the Carnegie Hall Citywide Series. The Knights is a wonderful modern day classical orchestra. They perform classical pieces as well as original pieces reminiscent of the greats. They also perform fun modern pieces such as Simple Gifts or The Harlem Shake. The orchestra has toured and recorded with renowned soloists including Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, Béla Fleck, and Gil Shaham, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, and the Vienna Musikverein. They perform in traditional concert halls as well as parks, plazas, and bars, all in an effort to reach listeners of all backgrounds and invite them into their music-making. Since incorporating in 2007, the orchestra has toured consistently across the United States and Europe.

Their original music is lovely and elegant. Here is a link to them playing Beethoven: https://youtu.be/a9HWo4THnHA

Tuesday, July 13th: Princeton Club lecture via Zoom - Final Transgression: One Woman's Tragic Destiny in War-torn France

Author Harriet Welty-Rochefort joined us live from Paris to discuss her most recent novel. Final Transgression,  85-year-old Caroline Aubry tells the tale of the tragic wartime destiny of her beloved younger sister, Séverine. When WW2 breaks out and Séverine’s collaborationist husband betrays her, she flees from Paris to her hometown in southwest France and to the château and the countess who was her mentor. Headstrong and determined, she ignores warnings about the risk of traveling to an area that has become a fierce battleground for rival groups of résistants, Nazis and collaborators. It is there, in her own village,  that she commits an egregious error––her final transgression.

Harriet Welty Rochefort grew up in Iowa, earned degrees at the University of Michigan (B.A.) and Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism (MSJ), then traveled to France - and never left. She is the author of three nonfiction books about the French: French Toast, French Fried, and Joie de Vivre. Final Transgression is her first work of fiction. Harriet lives with her French husband, Philippe, in Paris. Her website is www.harrietweltyrochefort.com

Wednesday, July 14th: Official Bastille Day Celebration in Central Park

French expatriates and francophiles alike gathered at the Central Park Summerstage for a celebration of all things French. Singers and DJs entertained the crowd and the Cadets Lafayette performed the anthems of the US and France.

Friday, July 16th: DM Fan club returns for Shake the Disease

You know it is going to be a good 80s New Wave night when DJ Lisa Shred plays Jubilation by Anything Box as the third song in. That explained why Alex and Terry were on the dance floor for 3 hrs straight...

Saturday, June 26th, 2020: Gotham Jazz Picnic

A wonderfully stalwart group of Swing Dancers gathered in Central Park's Bridle Path to listen to 5 all-star bands. The lineup included The Hot Toddies, King Solomon Hicks, Eyal Vilner, and Gordon Webster, just to name a few... The music went all afternoon and into the evening, and was only interrupted by a few drops of rain. Here is a photo taken during the gloom.

The Jazz Age Lawn Party was back on and in full swing on the oasis-like Governor's Island. Revelers in 1920s attire boarded ferries and went back in time to attend the annual JALP. Wednesday, July 17th: le Diner en Blanc

Months of preparation culminated in a spectacular -if short-lived- DEB 2019 for the members of the New Amsterdam Exterior Portable Dining Society (NAEPDS) or the maniacs, as I like to call them. The Dinner in White should have been called the Dinner in Wet: the evening was interrupted by biblical rains and storms, but the intrepid revelers took it all in stride as we broke down in 5 minutes what had taken us months to gather and painstakingly set up.

Saturday, July 20th: Depeche Mode Cruise

In stark contrast to the Dinner in White, the dress code on the annual DM cruise on NY's Circle Line was mostly black. DJ Lisa Shred spun an all Depeche Mode repertoire in the air-conditioned deck. Another DJ delivered Electro / Synthpop/ Nu Wave stuff to the outdoor decks, and despite the grueling heat, people danced and danced.

I still have lots of questions about the evening. Mostly, why was I wearing a sweater around my waist in 107 degree heat index weather? What Santa Claus was responsible for gifting us the cool light-up flashy necklace things, and where can I get a dozen of them?

This elegant festive gathering was thrown by the French Consulate of NY in cooperation with CAFUSA and a number of French corporate sponsors. Luckily, one of the sponsors was Moet Hennessy, so lots of delicious bubbly was on hand!

Hidden away on the second floor of Bistro Papillon on E. 54th, lies Caffe Taci, a space that transforms into a performance space for professional opera singers every Saturday night. NYEE 2018

Sunday, December 30th: The Salon's New Year's Eve Eve Party

Some say New Year's Eve is amateur night; that's 'cause all the dames n' dapper gents know the real party is the night before - at The Salon - what we like to call NEW YEAR's EVE EVE.

In what has now become one of our favorite annual traditions, a group of revelers attended Patrick Soluri's 11th annual NYEE extravaganza. We returned to the stunning and exclusive private club from the gilded age... The Players Club in Gramercy Square. A spectacular lineup of over 30 performers delighted and dazzled us all. It is difficult to pick a favorite, but the King Solomon Hicks Quartet who took over the front parlor with sultry sounds of Blues & Swing, deserve a special mention.

This annual event gathers 5,000 people in a secret location for a dinner where all dress in white. In addition to our own food, guests must provide our own tables, chairs, linens, table settings and décor. The sky is the limit, as long as you can cart it to the mystery spot... Our table of 12 creative, wacky, talented nuts won an award for most creative table overall. See our photos here: Table Extreme's photos.
